1. Theory Test

Assistance with the Theory Test is available using CD`s and Mock Papers.  However, we suggest a course of home study using the above materials.  A CD-ROM is available from the D.S.A. by mail order. Telephone 0870 010 1372  The Theory Test costs £15.50 Several web sites also give free access to Theory Test Questions Banks and offer free Mock Tests.

When sitting the Theory test, candidates sit at individual booths. Questions appear on a computer screen and you answer the questions asked simply by touching the screen, when you have finished all the questions to the test, you follow instructions on the screen and wait for your results and information within 30 minutes of completing the test.

The test is made up of 35 questions which you have to answer in 40 minutes, unless you are special needs in which you have to apply for additional time when booking the test.

You have to correctly answer 30 question out of 35 to pass the test.  Once you have passed the test it is valid for two years, if you do not pass your Practical Test in the two years, you will have to undertake and pass the Theory test again.

2. Hazard Perception

Hazard perception is the skill of a driver to identify situations at an early opportunity, in case of the need to take an action of avoidance, such as using skills of scanning, appropriate speed, planning well ahead and safe separation distance.

The hazard perception test, which will be introduced in 2002, will be taken at the same time as the theory test and will add about 15 minutes time.

Participants of the hazard test will be shown several clips filmed from a car, each clip will contain at least one hazard. When the candidate/participant sees a hazard they will have to respond to it as quickly as possible.

  • Reverse parking
  • You may also be asked to carry out an Emergency Stop exercise.
